It's time for the NFL to change the Pro Bowl selection process.
I say that seemingly every year when the Pro Bowl teams are announced, but I'm convinced of it now.
There are way too many slights on this year's team. Instead of the fans, players and coaches voting, have the personnel people, fans and a select panel of media members do the picking.
It would be a much better process. You wouldn't get players in on reputation only.
This year's teams are again full of slights. Here are 10 of them:
Tramon Williams, CB, Packers: Charles Woodson, his teammate, made the team, but Williams did not. Ask any scout and they will tell you that Williams has been better than Woodson this season. Williams should not only be on the team, he should be starting. He was robbed.
Josh Sitton, G Packers: The guard spot is a strong one in the NFC. But I think Sitton should have been on the team. It's close between him and Chris Snee of the Giants, but Sitton has played a little better. It's splitting hairs, but Sitton earned a spot on my team.
Mario Williams, DE, Texans: He didn't have the type of season some expected, but he played with a sports hernia that ultimately led the team to put him on IR last week. Williams still had 8 ½ sacks and didn't get much help from the rest of the Texans' underachieving line. I would have taken him over Robert Mathis of the Colts.
Lawrence Timmons, ILB, Steelers: I love Ray Lewis. I think he's the best middle linebacker ever. But there is no way he's been better than Timmons this season. I think this is a reputation pick. Timmons is a young, rising player, while Lewis has been the NFL's best for a long time.
Eric Weddle, FS, Chargers: There is no way Brandon Meriweather should be on the team. Weddle should be. He hasn't picked up the interceptions, which is why he isn't on the team. But if you watched the Chargers, he's been a top-notch safety for a good defense. Meriweather has been on the bench some.
Jonathan Goodwin, C, Saints: The Saints guards are both on the team, but Goodwin has been a steady player in the middle of the Saints line. The center position isn't a strong one in the NFC, but Goodwin has been significantly better than Andre Gurode of the Cowboys, who is starting.
Brandon Flowers, CB, Chiefs: In his third season, Flowers has developed into a quality cover corner. He is a big reason why the Chiefs have improved so much on defense. He's had a much better season than Darrelle Revis, who goes based on what he did last season.
Greg Jones, FB, Jaguars: This is being nitpicky because Vontae Leach of the Texans is a good fullback, but I think Jones had a better year. He's been a bone-crunching blocker for Maurice Jones-Drew.
Brandon Moore, G, Jets: The Jets have a top-notch running game and Moore is a big reason why. Of all the Jets linemen, he might be the most consistent yet you always hear about the others. He should be on the team.
Kareem McKenzie, Giants and Sebastian Vollmer, Patriots: I put them in a package deal because they're both right tackles and each of the Pro Bowl teams took three left tackles. The right tackles never get their due. These two have been the best of the right tackles this season. Please put right tackles on the team.
