What a week.
The Heat, less than unanimously supported as my No. 2 team in the CBSSports.com NBA Power Rankings last week, was beaten by the No. 4 Celtics. No surprise, some say.
Three days earlier, those same Celtics were humbled on their home floor by the No. 5 Lakers. We've seen that before, too.
Sounds like it's shake-up time atop the rankings ... beneath the No. 1 Spurs, that is. They've built a big enough cushion to absorb a small bump in the road (a loss at Philadelphia) yet remain comfortably ahead of the logjam.
Alas, just when the pieces were starting to fall into place, the Lakers were thumped back-to-back by the Magic and Bobcats, reminding everyone why they were no better than fifth in the ratings before the adventurous week.
Which gets us back to the Heat and Celtics. Clearly you could make a case they should be flip-flopped in the rankings.
And, as you might expect, I can make a case why they shouldn't.
Ask yourself this: Who had the better week?
The Heat won twice, including once over a team currently holding a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference (Indiana), and lost to the fourth-ranked team.
The Celtics beat the No. 2 team, but lost to No. 5. So, the Celtics had the best win, but the Heat had more. And the Celtics' loss was worse.
Sure, Boston had a head-to-head win over Miami, but weekly ratings examine the whole body of work, not only the heart. And in all three other games these two teams played last week, the Celtics either lost points or the Heat gained some.
I give the Heat two points for beating the Pacers and three for winning at Detroit. They lose only one for the loss at Boston. Week's net: Plus-4. I give the Celtics five points for beating the Heat, but subtract two for the home loss to the Lakers. Week's net: Plus-3.
You might not have agreed the Heat belonged ahead of the Celtics at the beginning of the week. That's fine.
But what occurred during the week didn't change anything. In fact, I would argue the Heat even strengthened its position marginally. Conclusion: No change, and that includes the No. 3 Mavericks, who went 2-1 on the road, losing by a point at Denver.
Because I know you're wondering ... Yes, this much thought went into every rating in this week's Power Rankings, where much of the shuffling occurred in the middle of the pack.
Power Rankings: Despite victory, Celtics can't pass Heat
