Watney reprising Doral finish at Innisbrook

PALM HARBOR, Fla. -- It was the best line of the day.
Too bad it wasn't uttered on the air.
When Mark Carnevale, a broadcaster with the PGA Tour Radio Network, noticed that a certain prominent somebody had been targeted after the round by the tour representative who is handling the random drug testing this week at the Transitions Championship, he laughed.
Nick Watney's number had come up in the testing draw, so after an opening 66, he was sent off for urinalysis. Everybody gets tapped on the shoulder at some point, but given the way Watney has been torching the tour, Carnevale couldn't resist.
"He should be tested," Carnevale cracked off the air.
Four days after he won his biggest title, Watney was setting fire to scorecards again, moving 7 under after 12 holes before settling for a 5-under finish at Innisbrook Resort. The polite Californian hasn't finished outside the top 10 in an officially sanctioned PGA Tour event since late last year, though he's beginning to show signs of hitting the wall.
"He's tired," caddie Chad Reynolds said. "I could see it kinda starting ..."
Reynolds made a downward movement with his hand. Watney hardly argued the notion. He's running on fumes and adrenaline right now.
"No complaints," the 29-year-old said, "but I maybe need to take a nap."
Watney and his wife took a brief tour of Miami on Monday, the day after he won the Cadillac Championship at Doral. Tuesday, he played five holes at Innisbrook, and he played in the pro-am Wednesday.
"I might have run out of gas a little bit at the end," he said.
Watney is seeking his eighth consecutive top-10 finish and he's entered next week at Bay Hill, too. As it relates to his play, perhaps the questions shouldn't relate to the hows and wherefores, but to why it took so long.
"It's only been a matter of time, to be honest," said veteran Kevin Sutherland, who like Watney is a Sacramento native and a Fresno State product. "He's always hit theball extremely well. It's just been a matter of finding his niche."
Sutherland paused a moment.
"Seven straight top-10s?" he said. "That's Tiger stuff."
